Blaze in Illinois

Aired September 26, 2003 - 08:15   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: I want to get you to Illinois now, the town of Cahokia. There is a blaze under way there. You can still see it in the predawn hours there. A gas pipeline has ruptured at the Phillips Petroleum facility in Cahokia.
Right now, fire crews on the scene trying to gain control of what is described as a massive fire. We can see part of it right now. Flames shooting into the air, hundreds of feet in the air at times. This is in -- near an area, southwestern Illinois, a residential suburb of East St. Louis. You may be familiar with the Cahokia Mounds. They're nearby, a group of about 85 prehistoric Native American earth works. The population of that town 17,500. It's news to us right now coming out of southwestern Illinois. We'll watch it for you when we get more.
