CNN is looking for its next bright internship stars

We offer internships at our central London Bureau, where we help to bring the news to more than 250 million homes around the world. We are looking for CNN's future: people with fresh ideas, innovative viewpoints, a willingness to work hard, and a commitment to the highest standards of journalism.

At our central London bureau we offer 13 internships spanning from newsgathering to special feature programmes, digital and sports.

Interns play an important role in the daily operations of CNN. In fact, many of the current journalists within the London bureau started out as interns.

The internships are designed for journalism graduates or candidates from a related field seeking a career in journalism. You must be a British citizen or have the right to work in the UK long term prior to applying for our intern programme. We are unable to accept people with short term work/study visas. Language skills are not essential but would be an advantage. Good English and grammar skills are a must.

NEWS INTERNSHIPS

Primary responsibilities include research, fact-checking, transcribing footage, assisting on shoots, contributing story and show ideas, attending planning and creative meetings and sourcing images and footage.

Candidates should be detail-orientated, have strong writing and research skills, the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment, and have the confidence to pitch story ideas and potential guests to show producers.

- Interview Content Producing & guest booking
The content producing (or planning) internship is right in the heart of the newsroom and central to CNN’s coverage of breaking news stories. The main role of the planning desk is to find and secure the most compelling, interesting and relevant voices across the world to give insight into the top stories of the day. The ideal candidate will have an eye for a strong interview idea, excellent organisational skills, good logistical sense (to get guests to the right place at the right time), acute attention to detail, quick to learn, adaptable and overall a great team player. The planning desk can be fast-paced and intense during breaking news, with periods of downtime which allow for forward planning.

DIGITAL INTERNSHIPS

CNN’s award-winning Digital team in London is looking for two interns. So if you’re passionate about news and current affairs, and want to work for one of the biggest names in journalism, read on.

Our global team creates content consumed by millions of people every day, and with tectonic changes in the world, news and impactful storytelling are more important now than ever.

A successful CNN intern is committed to quality journalism, has strong knowledge of international issues, a keen interest in the digital media landscape, and a sharp eye for the stories that spark conversation on a daily basis.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work alongside a team of dedicated and experienced journalists, attend regular editorial meetings and participate in the editorial process.

News intern: This intern will be assigned to the digital news team, and will research and write news stories. As the internship progresses, there will be opportunities to pitch and write distinctive features.

Programming intern: This intern will be assigned to the global programming team, which curates the homepage and mobile app. There will be opportunities to sharpen our homepage headlines, write engaging push alerts and edit some of our key landing pages.
Proficiency in another language would be desirable, but not essential. A degree is not a must-have, but a passion for journalism is.

  • The internship is usually based at our central London office, but as this one will be held almost entirely remotely, the intern will be expected to work from home and regularly communicate with the team via video conferencing.

CNN London is currently seeking enthusiastic candidates for paid internship positions on the Style and Travel teams. We are seeking candidates with fresh ideas, innovative viewpoints, a willingness to work hard and a commitment to the highest standards of journalism.

Job description: Over the course of three-four months, our interns will gain experience working as part of the Style and Travel teams where responsibilities will include research, reporting and writing stories for various digital CNN platforms. The successful candidate will have a strong and broad knowledge of fashion, art, design, and travel. They will understand digital journalism, have a meticulous eye for detail and be able to work under pressure.

Eligibility: These internships are well-suited to someone who has recently graduated with a masters in digital journalism, or who has comparable experience, and who wants to pursue a career in digital journalism. You must be a British/EU citizen or have the right to work in the UK long-term prior to applying for our intern program. CNN will not be accepting people with short-term work/study visas. Good English and grammar skills are a must. Additional languages are not essential but would be an advantage.

-Motion Graphics
The Motion Graphics intern for Digital Video in London will assist Designers and Producers with graphics and animations for all CNN digital platforms. The Video Development Group is split into two primary units, focusing on daily turn news & feature content, as well as longer-lead series. This internship position will spend time with both units, creating an opportunity to learn a wide range of skills over the course of the program. The intern may assist with the following: animate video package elements - including opens, lower thirds, and text on screen - help craft smart and engaging explainer videos, explore sound design and editing in Adobe Premiere, mask photos and rotoscope video, as well as research and asset gathering.

We’re looking for curious, versatile, enthusiastic and proactive candidates with an interest in both news and features content, long and short-form video, with a mixture of technical and editorial skills. They need to demonstrate both an ability to work under the pressure of news deadlines, along with the thoughtfulness and creativity required for longer-lead features projects. Previous interns have seen their own ideas published on the site within weeks of joining and have quickly established themselves as an invaluable player on the team.

This internship position will spend time with both units, creating an opportunity to learn a wide range of skills over the course of the program. -Digital Sport Video
Working for CNN London’s digital sport video team across all CNN platforms; the digital sport video intern will assist producers and supervisors across the full gamut of video production, from the research and pitching stage right through to post production and everything in between.

The Sport video unit is small but responsible for all sport output in the organization, focusing on daily turn news, feature and sponsorship content, as well as longer-form video. This internship position will have an opportunity to learn a wide range of skills over the course of the program. The intern may assist with the following: research, pitching and attending brainstorms, assisting producers, editors and shooters at base and in the field, explore sound design and editing in Adobe Premiere.

A basic to moderate level of editing experience is essential for this role. After Effects and Photoshop knowledge is preferable, but not necessary.
