NEW CUYAMA, CA - MARCH 28: In an aerial view from a drone, the San Andreas Fault and Elkhorn Scarp are seen south of Carrizo Plain on March 28, 2021 north of New Cuyama, California. The San Andreas Fault, long feared for its potential to cause the biggest natural disaster ever in Southern California, is capable of producing and 8.1-magnitude earthquake that could killed thousands of people and cause hundreds of billions of dollars in damage. The southern segment of the fault, extending for hundreds of miles from the Salton Sea in the south, passes as close as 35 miles from Los Angeles, through the Big Bend section in Kern County and on to Parkfield in Monterey County. It is the Big Bend section of the fault that is believed to have become locked, preventing the fault from slipping to release the ever-increasing pressures caused by the grinding of the Pacific and North American tectonic plates. The locked fault is rapidly increasing the risk of the long overdue "Big One" quake that scientists say is inevitable. (Photo by David McNew/Getty Images)

The IceNode robot, designed to study ice and ocean
properties in a changing Arctic environment, deployed at
Ice Camp Whale during Operation Ice Camp (ICE CAMP)
2024. ICE CAMP is a three-week operation run by the
Navy's Arctic Submarine Laboratory (ASL) that allows the
Navy to assess its operational readiness in the Arctic,
increase experience in the region, advance
understanding of the Arctic environment, and continue
to develop relationships with other services, allies, and
partner organizations. Capable of sustained operations
below the ice, IceNode can support tasks for Navy
operations and gather data to improve predictions for
sea-ice extent in a warming environment
(see: climate.nasa.gov/vital-signs/arctic-sea-ice). This
work was funded by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory,
which is managed for the agency by Caltech. This work
was supported by the U.S. Navy’s Arctic Submarine Lab
(ASL), with acknowledgement to the field team who
assisted deployment and recovery of the robot

St. Paul, MN., Wednesday, 3/29/2000. Aaron Wenger of South Minneapolis, a CLEARCorps lead removal crew member installed weather strip on new windows in a house near downtown St. Paul. Twelve windows in the house were removed and replaced as part of the effort to reduce the risk of childhood lead poisioning. Plastic sheeting was taped up in the kitchen to contain any dust from the lead cleanup job. CLEARCorps is a nonprofit lead removal company, part of the AmeriCorps national service network. LEAD31 All children up to age 6 living in Minneapolis and St. Paul should be tested for exposure to lead, state officials are expected to recommend Friday3/31. This is a departure from previous recommendations, which focused on children living in older homesthat have lead-based paint. Public health officials aremaking the change in an attempt to simplify the guidelines _ there's concern that too many children aren't being tested. There is little evidence at this point that lead poisoning is getting worse. In Minneapolis, about 10 percent of children who are tested have elevated levels of lead in their blood.(Photo By BRUCE BISPING/Star Tribune via Getty Images)

Local Greeks and foreign tourists are protesting against the extensive occupation of the coast of umbrellas and sunbeds in the Greek islands and mainland, a growing nationwide movement against the expansion of expensive rented shadow. Beachbars are occupying larger areas than their permission which do not allow people to have free access to the beach. Similar incidents occurred in Agia Anna and Plaka beach. In Naxos the movement ''Save the beaches of Naxos now!'' emerged forming a legal complaint in the prosecutor similar to Paros Island with the media known name Towel Movement led to the government to bring inspectors.
