In the 2016 general election, Hillary Clinton won New Mexico with 48.26% of the vote, compared with Donald Trump’s 40.04%. New Mexico has historically been a presidential bellwether state. Since becoming a state in 1912, it has sided with the loser of presidential elections only three times: Gerald Ford in 1976, Al Gore in 2000 and Hillary Clinton in 2016. Democrats generally have a solid base in the northern part of the state; southeast New Mexico is strongly conservative and Republican. Its state Legislature, its governor’s office and its entire congressional delegation are controlled by Democrats.
