Israel believes some 159 hostages are currently estimated to be held in Gaza, according to Israel Defense Forces spokesperson Daniel Hagari.
The number comes ahead of an expected release of a new group of hostages on the sixth day of the truce with Hamas.
Meanwhile, Israeli military troops are “prepared operationally” along truce lines in Gaza, Hagari said.
The truce line effectively keeps Israeli troops in northern Gaza and keeps them from moving south during the pause in fighting, an IDF spokesperson told CNN last week.
“Today, the troops killed three terrorists who violated the truce’s terms and posed a threat against our forces,” the spokesperson said.
He claimed that Mohammed Zubeidi, a senior commander of the Islamic Jihad militant group, was killed in an Israeli military operation in Jenin in the occupied West Bank overnight.
