Matt Wells is Executive Editor for Europe, Middle East and Africa, based in London. He takes on responsibility for coverage of the region across CNN's global digital platforms, overseeing breaking news, features, and enterprise journalism. He heads an award-winning team of journalists based in London and across the region, dedicated to comprehensive coverage of the biggest global stories.
Prior to this role, Wells was the International Director of Global Programming and Alerting for CNN Digital Worldwide, overseeing digital output across all of CNN's international digital platforms.
Prior to CNN, Wells managed digital output for The Guardian as senior digital editor. He was previously the live editor, overhauling The Guardian's digital news desk and directing a team of 25 reporters. He was one of the founding editors of The Guardian's ground-breaking US digital operation, running coverage of major live news events, such as the 2012 presidential election, and the unfolding of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Snowden revelations.
Wells launched The Guardian's podcast department, conceiving and launching a suite of Webby award-winning shows such as the weekly Media Talk podcast.
Wells is based in London and is a graduate of The University of Birmingham. He completed a postgraduate journalism diploma at City University, London.
