Many huge ancient river channels begin from the chaotic terrain from north-central canyons and run north. The three Tharsis volcanoes (dark red spots), each about 25 kilometers high, are visible to the west. South of Valles Marineris is very ancient terrain covered by many impact craters.

25 February 2022, Brandenburg, Schwedt: At PCK-Raffinerie GmbH, surplus gas is burned off in the crude oil processing plant. According to the company, the supply of crude oil from Russia via the "Friendship" pipeline to the PCK oil refinery in Schwedt is currently running reliably and without any problems. The Russian energy company Rosneft took over a large part of the PCK oil refinery in Schwedt last year. More than 1100 people work at the refinery. The "Friendship" pipeline from Russia, which supplies 25 percent of Germany's crude oil, according to the refinery, ends there. Rosneft is the largest Russian oil producer. MCKITTRICK, CA - MARCH 23: Pump jacks and wells are seen in an oil field on the Monterey Shale formation where gas and oil extraction using hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is on the verge of a boom on March 23, 2014 near McKittrick, California. Critics of fracking in California cite concerns over water usage and possible chemical pollution of ground water sources as California farmers are forced to leave unprecedented expanses of fields fallow in one of the worst droughts in California history. Concerns also include the possibility of earthquakes triggered by the fracking process which injects water, sand and various chemicals under high pressure into the ground to break the rock to release oil and gas for extraction though a well. The 800-mile-long San Andreas Fault runs north and south on the western side of the Monterey Formation in the Central Valley and is thought to be the most dangerous fault in the nation. Proponents of the fracking boom saying that the expansion of petroleum extraction is good for the economy and security by developing more domestic energy sources and increasing gas and oil exports. Miners wait for an elevator to take them below at the start of their shift at the Pivdennodonbaska 3 coal mine on February 3, 2022 in Vuhledar, Ukraine. Located in the Donetsk basin in eastern Ukraine, the mine is one of the most developed and biggest coal mines in the country.

Ukraine was the third largest coal producer in Europe, and then in 2014, the war began and production declined. 84 million metric tonnes was being dug out of the ground in 2013, but eight years later, that output dropped to 24 million metric tonnes.

Most Donbas mines were seized by Russians and pro-Russian rebels in late 2014 causing a sudden shortage of electricity in Ukraine, where some power stations had to be reequipped for gas and oil use instead of coal.

Then due to the Covid-19 economic downturn and an unusually warm winter, demand for coal has decreased. To make matters worse, Russian coal is cheaper than Ukrainian, and there is no domestic ban against the Russian coal. Ukrainian mines are feeling the pinch.

Almost all local mines operate at a loss and rely on heavy subsidies to function. "We are always struggling to turn a profit," said Yevhen Viktorovych, Deputy director of labor protection at the Vuhledar mine. "The mine employs 2150 workers, of which 1400 are miners. The youngest miner is 18, the oldest is 65," he said.
