CRYING and helpless, these disfigured babies are the latest victims of what some scientists are calling a bigger threat than HIV. The city of Recife on Brazils tropical north-east coast is the epicentre of the Zika virus outbreak, which is has been linked to thousands of cases of microcephaly. At the forefront of the citys epidemic is the IMIP Hospital. Among the patients seen at the treatment centre on Tuesday, February 2, were a pair of twins where one of the newborns had been born with microcephaly and the other without. Brazils Health Ministry estimates roughly between 500,000 and 1.5 million people are infected with Zika in the country. Experts suspect the mosquito-borne virus in pregnant women can cause microcephaly in babies, but concrete evidence has yet to surface.
