Baby Sussex is named as Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor

Meghan and Harry have named their first child Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.

The name is believed to have little precedent within the modern British royal family.

The couple shared the news on Instagram with an image of Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh meeting their newest great-grandchild.

Meghan praised for wearing white dress by British designer Grace Wales Bonner

Baby Sussex was wrapped in a £105 ($136) shawl made by UK company GH Hurt & Son during his first appearance in front of the media, according to Britain's Press Association. The news agency says it's the same company that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge used for their children.

Meanwhile, Meghan was wearing a white dress by British designer Grace Wales Bonner. The Duchess of Sussex has been praised on social media for "not trying to hide" her postpartum bump.

What surname will the baby have?

Those entitled to be called His or Her Royal Highness don't, traditionally, have a surname.

When William and Harry were at school and during their later military careers, they used "Wales" -- derived from their father's official title as Prince of Wales.

But as for Meghan and Harry, their child will likely use Sussex -- their assigned dukedom -- as a surname, just as William and Catherine's children use Cambridge at school.

What will Meghan and Harry name Baby Sussex?

From CNN's Lauren Said-Moorhouse

Now that we've met Baby Sussex, the world is eagerly wanting to know the name of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's son.

Bookmakers have Spencer (a nod to the maiden name of Harry's mother), Alexander and Arthur among their top choices for the newborn son.

But what's in a name?

There aren't any royal rules for choosing names but the British royal family likes to honor those who came before them.

We can also count on Baby Sussex being given a fair few names. Queen Elizabeth II bestowed four names on each of her four children. The full name of her eldest son and heir is Charles Philip Arthur George.

Meanwhile Prince Harry's full name is Henry Charles Albert David. Harry's brother William, the Duke of Cambridge, has continued the tradition of multiple names with all three of his children.

Meghan and Harry have chosen a name

From CNN's royal correspondent Max Foster

Meghan and Harry's meeting with Queen Elizabeth II could be happening right now, which means we may have an announcement on Baby Sussex's name a little later on.

CNN's royal correspondent Max Foster said the reason we might not know the name yet is because the couple wanted to put it past the Queen first -- not because she can refuse it, but out of politeness.

"Most people don't have a grandmother like the Queen, they wanted to put it past her first so then we'll have the announcement a little later on," Foster said.

"I can tell you they've decided on the name at least. There was some debate about whether or not they'd committed yet."

Prince Charles' wife, Camilla, shown picture of newborn during walkabout in Germany

Prince Charles, who is Prince Harry's father, is currently in Germany with his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.

Charles said on Tuesday in Berlin that they had not yet met their new grandson, but "couldn't be more delighted at the news."

According to Britain's Press Association news agency, the Duchess of Cornwall was shown the new pictures of Baby Sussex on Wednesday during a walkabout in Leipzig city center.

While looking at the photo on a mobile phone, Camilla smiled and said: "Thank you for showing this to me," according to PA.

How the revealing of this royal baby is different to others

Meghan and Harry bucked recent convention by choosing to avoid a high-profile public "unveiling" soon after the baby's birth.

Unlike Prince William's wife Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, Meghan chose not to walk into the media spotlight with her newborn, hours after giving birth.

Today the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were met by a small press pool of just one reporter, one photographer, three cameramen, the couple's own private photographer and a household press office photographer, Britain's Press Association news agency reported.

The couple ultimately kept the details of Meghan's pregnancy under wraps after announcing they were expecting a baby last October, in line with their repeated requests for privacy since they began dating years ago.

On Monday the palace also would not confirm where the baby was delivered but said Harry had been by his wife's side.

Meghan and Harry's new baby has made history by becoming the first biracial British child in the royal family, a significant milestone within British society and across the Commonwealth.
