Kit Keane, 19, is a politics student from Arlington, Virginia currently studying at Kings College. She attended the vigil held in Trafalgar Square on March 23, the day after the attack on Westminster. "What happened yesterday really shook me. I'm in this city far from where I'm from," she says, emotion etched across her face. "No matter what your politics are, you can come together for something like this." Taking a moment to compose herself, she continues: "We're almost so desensitized to [violence]. I got up and went to school today without even thinking about it. I crossed the Thames on my way to school and didn't think about it twice."

Britain's parliament reopened on Thursday with a minute's silence in a gesture of defiance a day after an attacker sowed terror in the heart of Westminster, killing three people before being shot dead. Sombre-looking lawmakers in a packed House of Commons chamber bowed their heads and police officers also marked the silence standing outside the headquarters of London's Metropolitan Police nearby.
