New York state reported 44,431 new Covid-19 cases on Friday, marking a 14% increase over Thursday’s record-breaking case count of 38,835.
"This is not a surprise," Gov. Kathy Hochul said Friday. "This is a very, very contagious variant."
Hochul said the new cases were detected after nearly 360,000 Covid-19 tests were conducted in just one day.
“With a lot of testing, the upside is we’re getting a handle on where the cases are and how we can control that spread,” Hochul said.
Hospitalizations in the state are rising, but at a lower rate. Friday's data had 4,744 New Yorkers hospitalized with Covid-19, marking an increase of 4.6% over Thursday’s numbers.
Hochul also announced 69 new Covid-related deaths on Friday. "Our hearts go out to their family members, just on the verge of this beautiful holiday. To know that there'll be an empty seat at the table has to be incredibly painful for them, so let's keep them all in our prayers,” she said.
